The Leadership Lens Sharpen your view, elevate your impact—one edition at a time.
Leadership isn’t perfection—it’s balance between competence and connection.
When I first joined the refining industry, I had two very different bosses who left a lasting impression on me.
My first manager was technically brilliant—a true expert in petrochemicals with an ability to think outside the box and solve problems creatively. Yet, his people skills were not his strength. Despite his capability, he often struggled to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and senior leadership. Over time, this limited his opportunities.
In contrast, a subsequent manager openly admitted his technical limitations, but excelled in building relationships, inspiring trust, and navigating organizational dynamics. His people skills more than made up for what he lacked in technical depth.
For me, these two leaders represented opposite ends of the spectrum. They also taught me that a strong leadership brand isn’t about being perfect—it’s about finding the balance between competence and connection. My own leadership role model lies somewhere in between.
Series 4/6: Building a Leadership Brand
What Do People Say When You’re Not in the Room?
Imagine this: you’ve just left a meeting, and the discussion continues after you step out. What do people say about you? Are you remembered as the leader who inspires confidence, the one who makes things clearer, or the one who drains the energy from the room?
That, in essence, is your leadership brand. It’s not your title, your resume, or the number of hours you work. It’s the story others tell about you when you’re not around. And here’s the thing—you already have a brand, whether you’ve shaped it intentionally or not.
The real question is: Are you letting others define your brand, or are you taking charge of it yourself?
Why Your Leadership Brand Matters
In a world where visibility and perception carry as much weight as competence, your leadership brand becomes the bridge between your abilities and your opportunities.
I once coached a talented project manager who constantly delivered results but was frustrated that her contributions weren’t being recognized. She told me, “I feel invisible, even though I’m working harder than ever.” After gathering feedback, we discovered her brand was being shaped as “dependable and detail-oriented”—useful, but not the profile of a future leader. Together, we worked on elevating her visibility, aligning her communication with her strengths, and making her leadership aspirations clear. Within a year, she was tapped for a regional leadership role.
Reflection Prompt: What three words would people use to describe your leadership today—and are they the ones you want?
Crafting Your Leadership Narrative
Your leadership brand begins with your narrative—the story you tell about who you are, what you stand for, and how you lead.
But let’s be honest: many professionals never craft their story. They let performance reviews or LinkedIn bios do the talking. That’s like letting someone else write your autobiography.
A simple way to begin:
-
Anchor in Strengths: What do you consistently do well that others rely on?
-
Connect with Values: What principles guide your decisions? (Integrity? Curiosity? Courage?)
-
Shape with Aspiration: Where are you headed, and how do you want to grow?
A senior leader I coached used this approach to shift from being seen as “the fixer” to “the builder of future leaders.” He didn’t abandon solving problems; he simply reframed his contributions in line with his strengths and values and communicated it clearly. The perception—and opportunities—shifted quickly.
Practical Exercise: Write your “leadership headline” in one sentence: “I am a leader who [strength] by [value] to [impact].”
Aligning Strengths, Values, and Communication Style
Here’s where most leaders stumble: they may know their strengths and values, but their communication doesn’t reflect them.
Take for example an executive who told me, “I care deeply about developing my people,” but his team saw him as unapproachable. Why? His communication style was clipped and rushed, so his values never translated into behavior. Once he began asking more questions, holding regular one-on-one check-ins, and giving thoughtful feedback, the brand he intended — “a leader who grows others”—finally matched how people experienced him.
Reflection Question: Does the way I speak, write, and show up every day reflect the leader I want to be known as?
Common Mistakes That Weaken Executive Presence
While crafting a brand sounds inspiring, many leaders inadvertently sabotage theirs. Here are the most common pitfalls I see in coaching:
-
Overemphasis on Title or Authority – Your brand can’t be “I’m the boss.” Authority may open doors, but respect keeps them open.
-
Inconsistency Between Words and Actions – Nothing erodes a brand faster than saying one thing and doing another.
-
Neglecting Visibility – Doing great work quietly is admirable, but if no one sees it, it won’t shape your brand.
-
Trying to Be Someone You’re Not – People can spot inauthenticity a mile away. Your best brand is rooted in the truth of who you are.
And yes, one mistake many leaders make: thinking their sense of humor makes them “relatable.” (Pro tip: Dad jokes may not always land in boardrooms.)
Building Your Leadership Brand Intentionally
So how do you move from accidental branding to intentional leadership branding? Here are three practical steps:
-
Seek Feedback Proactively Ask trusted peers or mentors: “When I’m not in the room, how do people describe me?” Their answers might surprise you—and guide your focus.
-
Define Your Anchor Message Decide on a simple, memorable theme that ties together your strengths and values. For example: “I’m known for simplifying complexity and empowering others to act.”
-
Live It Consistently Every meeting, email, and presentation is a chance to reinforce your brand. Consistency builds trust; inconsistency creates confusion.
A client of mine decided his brand would be “calm clarity in chaos.” He started showing up differently — pausing before answering, framing issues simply, and staying grounded when tempers rose. Within months, colleagues began using those very words to describe him. That’s the power of alignment.
Humor Insight: Branding Gone Wrong
A manager once told me proudly, “I think my brand is being the one who always responds to emails at 11 PM.” I gently reminded him: that’s not a brand; that’s a sleep disorder. Remember, the story people tell about you should be intentional—not accidental.
Reflection and Call to Action
Your leadership brand is not a “nice to have.” It’s the currency of trust, visibility, and influence. The good news? You don’t need to invent a new persona. The most compelling brands are built on authenticity, not performance.
Closing Questions to Reflect On:
-
What’s the current story people tell about me when I’m not in the room?
-
Is that story aligned with the leader I want to be?
-
What’s one action I can take this week to shift my brand closer to that aspiration?
Because at the end of the day, leadership isn’t about being remembered for the hours you worked—it’s about being remembered for the impact you created.
